ASNT is excited to announce the introduction of a new ultrasonic testing (UT) competition at ASNT 2022: The Annual Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. The ASNT UT Competition will assess general UT skills for two sets of competitors, and a US$500 cash prize will be awarded to the winner of each flight.

The conference takes place from 31 October–3 November 2022, and the UT Competition will take place on Tuesday, 1 November. The competition is divided into two divisions:

Each flight is limited to 24 competitors.

Flight 1 is open to current or recently graduated NDT trade school, technical school, college, or university students. The intent is that the candidates have completed the school’s UT coursework and are proficient in ultrasonic straight beam corrosion scanning and shear wave scanning for weld defects. Flight 1 competitors are not certified Level II technicians. Flight 1 will take place from 8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.

Flight 2 is open to current NDT Level IIs from any NDT service provider. The candidate should have a UT Level II certification to SNT-TC-1A/CP-189 or ISO 9712 and at least five (5) years of experience in ultrasonic straight beam corrosion scanning and shear wave scanning for weld defects. Flight 2 competitors are not Level III certified professionals. Flight 2 will take place from 1:00–4:00 p.m.

The ASNT UT Competition is sponsored by Materials Research & Technology and equipment and supplies are being provided by Evident.

“In this highly competitive world, competition is all about pitting yourself against your peers, and often against yourself,” said Raul M. Leon, president of NDT Innovations Inc., Materials Research & Technology. “We are instilled with a sense of competition from a very young age. We are told to excel in life, academics, and in the field. We need to excel in order to have a safer and better world. I know that this competition will be a vehicle toward achieving the goal of the ASNT family.”

Leon said he is looking forward to the event and encourages technicians to apply. “The idea of a UT competition organized by ASNT is a new part of our tradition of excellence. I am honored to be involved, and I hope that this competition can evolve into one more beautiful tradition for our ASNT family.”
