The first Goel Ultrasonic Testing Challenge will take place 3–4 December 2021 in South Plainfield, NJ. Sponsored by Atlas Evaluation & Inspection Services (AEIS), the challenge provides technicians the opportunity to complete a series of ultrasonic testing (UT) challenges, competing for a $5,000 prize.

“Our purpose in sponsoring this challenge is to recognize technicians, on an annual basis, who perform UT on structures—buildings and bridges. NDT is an amazing field, and we have a great passion for it,” said Nagesh Goel, president of AEIS.

Participants must hold Level II certification, as defined in clause 8.14.1 and 8.20 of AWS D1.1: 2020, with at least two years of structural UT experience. The first round is limited to 56 participants. Registrants must use their own equipment in the competition.

The competition will include two rounds. In the first round, the technicians will each inspect two 8 in. long plates with different joint configurations. Their results will be reported in the AWS D1.1 format.

The top six technicians will advance to the second round, which will require inspecting two 12–16 in. welds and reporting results.

“NDT offers valuable career opportunities for those interested in working in this growing field,” Goel said. “We look forward to celebrating the next generation of UT talent.”
