Four certification badges for ASNT members

By Haley Cowans

ASNT Certification Services LLC is introducing a new way for ASNT certificate holders to securely track and share their certifications with anyone around the world through digital badges. ASNT’s new digital badges are embedded with information about the certificant’s accomplishments in a way that is verifiable and easily shareable. The software includes tools so that users can showcase their certification in a variety of digital formats, including as part of their email signature or online resume and through different social media platforms.

In this episode of Chat NDT with ASNT, host Debbie Segor, CAE, speaks with Rali Petrova, ASNT’s Deputy Director of Certification, about this new service. Read an excerpt of their conversation below to learn more about ASNT’s new digital badges.

___

Debbie: What is a digital badge?

Rali: A digital badge is a way for certificants to share their certification through ASNT via social networks, through their email as part of their signature, and online on LinkedIn, Facebook, and all kinds of different social media platforms. It’s accessible anywhere, it’s shareable worldwide, and it makes it very easy for certificants to promote their hard-earned credentials.

.

Debbie: What is BadgeCert?

Rali: BadgeCert is a platform that enables organizations like ASNT to recognize stakeholders’ accomplishments with these dynamic digital badges. The badges that they offer are 100% verifiable and are embedded with qualifying information and details that’s called metadata to showcase the certificant’s accomplishments, and then the certificant can share them with others.

.

Debbie: Who will get an ASNT digital badge?

Rali: Both longtime certificate holders and any new certificants going forward will automatically receive a digital badge once they become certified.

.

Debbie: How does someone get their badge?

Rali: Those that are already are established and have had their certification or certifications for a long time will receive an email from ASNT, and there will be instructions in that email on how they can access their badges in how they can share the badge. For new certificants, within 24 to 48 hours from receiving their certification, they will receive their email from certification@asnt.org with information on how to claim their badge. I would recommend that they check their spam or junk email folder if they don’t see it after that point.

.

Debbie: Is there a fee associated with the badges?

Rali: No, badges are complimentary to all those who hold a valid certification.

.

Debbie: If someone wants to frame their certificate, can they print the digital badge?

Rali: Yes, there will be a way for certificants to access a downloadable PDF of the ASNT certificate, and it will be very easy for them to print it out and put it in a frame.

.

Debbie: Are certificants required to log in to BadgeCert?

Rali: BadgeCert doesn’t require a login, but we do recommend that certificants set up a profile on BadgeCert’s platform, especially in a situation where they have multiple certifications. It’s a very easy way to see all of your badges within the BadgeCert portfolio and keep track of them, and to be able to share all of your badges at once.

.

Debbie: Why is ASNT moving to digital badging?

Rali: We want to recognize certificant’s achievements and establish credibility in real time. These are verifiable icons that have all of the information that was on the certificate. I think it really shows the difficult process that certificants have to go through—all of their knowledge, their skills and abilities—in order to earn that credential. It’s a great way to be able to not just have it on paper, hanging on your wall, but be able to showcase it online. It makes it a much more accessible way to really show the world that you’ve been certified with ASNT.

  1. I like the badge idea, still would love for ASNT to either charge or issue a soft stamp with the ASNT logo and individual certification number for stamping documentation it would help out a lot.
