NDT is a vast industry, with many different potential career paths. In the latest episode of Chat NDT with ASNT, host Debbie Segor, CAE, speaks with Paul Holloway about how his NDT career has brought together the varied elements of research, physics, and hands-on applications in the field—as well as his love of music.

Paul Holloway is President of Holloway NDT & Engineering Inc. He is a professional engineer based in Ontario, Canada, providing advanced ultrasonic field services, training, and consulting. As a lifelong fan of music (and musician himself), Paul found himself drawn to ultrasonic testing, amazed by the way that sound waves could be used for this important work.

“Seeing through steel with sound to me seems like some sort of superpower,” Paul said.

Paul earned a bachelor of applied science degree and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. As he notes in the podcast, NDT represented a perfect example of the practical application of the physics that he had learned in the real world. He discusses how his knowledge as both an engineer and an NDT technician compliments one another, noting that understanding the physics behind the testing principles helps him to drill down to the basics and better understand what’s happening during testing.

Paul is eager to share these basic physics concepts with others in the field, which is his inspiration behind his YouTube channel, Holloway NDT & Engineering Inc. Although the videos are quick overviews, Paul shared that he spends a lot of time putting them together, partly due to how much he enjoys working on them. (He also shared on the episode that some videos include hidden nods to his favorite band, Rush.)

With 20 years of experience in ultrasonic testing, Paul holds numerous patents and trademarks—including the PA-CAT technique and the ERVW block collaboration with PH Tool—and regularly publishes articles for industry journals. On the episode, he and Debbie discuss these research and development projects along with his experience starting his own NDT business that focuses on both research and testing in the field.
