March is Women’s History Month in the United States, and the March issue of Materials Evaluation (ME) celebrates the work and accomplishments of women in the NDT industry. If you have not had a chance to read the latest issue, here is a sample of the content:

Feature: ASNT Advocates for Women in NDT

This feature article, written by ASNT Periodicals Editor Jill Ross, provides history and information about the newly formed ASNT Council for Women in NDT (WIN). The Council’s mission is “to help women enter and succeed in the field of nondestructive testing.” It was recently elevated from a committee to a council to highlight the importance of this mission. The article goes into detail about the formation of the Council, as well as the leaders who helped start it and continue to work toward its mission. It also lays out the Council’s strategic plan, noting how it aligns with ASNT’s Strategic Plan. The article also provides information about the different teams formed within the Council (including the Outreach; Program; Career Resources; Communications; and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion teams) and encourages readers to get involved.

NDE Outlook: The Next Generation of NDT

NDE Outlook is a new column added as part of the redesign of ME that launched in January of this year. This column focuses on “possibility thinking for NDT and NDE” and is edited by Associate Technical Editor Ripi Singh. The March issue features a column written by Tracie Clifford, Program Lead of the Nondestructive Testing and QA/QC program at Chattanooga State Community College. In this column, Clifford interviews female students in the program, getting their perspective on the advantages for NDT employers who have more women on their staff, the expectations they have for their future workplaces, their experience as NDT students, and their view of the perception of women in the industry.

At Work: Shauna Kagan

Shauna Kagan is one of ASNT’s Faces of NDT.

At Work profiles are another new feature of the ME redesign, profiling researchers, academics, students, engineers, inventors, and any other member of ASNT with an interesting NDT story to tell. This issue features Shauna Kagan, one of ASNT’s “Faces of NDT.” In the profile, Kagan discusses how she first encountered the NDT industry and her early training, her current work and professional goals, her work on the WIN Council, and her views on what qualities make a good NDT technician and what the industry can do to encourage more people to seek careers in NDT.

We’ll take specifics about initiatives on May 6th. Thank you!
